Popping Pills Can Be Harmful

In this article, you will learn about how popping pills and taking unnecessary prescriptions can affect your body and open the door to many of the problems, as well as how they can be hazardous to us. This harm can be prevented using few methods, one of which is Emotional Freedom Techniques. The EFT Tapping has proven to be an effective alternative therapy to help individuals overcome their issues by working on the root cause of it.

There was a time when I used to run to the pharmacy every time I felt the beginning of a pain or an illness.

Yes I did suffer from the most painful migraine and practically, stayed in bed the entire day heavily drugged, from all the medication I took to lessen the pain. I would be relieved for a few days and then the pain would just come back. Yes I was tired of dealing with pain. If it wasn’t the headache , it would be another part of the body aching.

I just wanted to be free, so I did the best thing I could possibly think of. I took a paracetamol every day irrespective of whether I had pain or not. I didn’t know what the consequences were at that time. After a few years I went for my annual check up and realized that I had type 2 diabetes. On further investigation what came to light was that, the excessive medication had destroyed the beta cells in my liver resulting in diabetes.

Now I had to live with pain and diabetes.

This was my breakthrough moment. I gave up all the pills and started researching about more holistic methods to get rid of the pain and get back my overall health.

What I learnt was that my body was giving me these signals all along and I just chose to ignore it, till it really affected me in a big way.

My personal research led me to find evidence that ‘stress’ was the big killer here, leading to the migraine and other aches and pains all over my body. My emotional health had been tossed out of the window and I was at an all-time low in life. And that's when I was introduced to Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT).

POPPING PILLS - A WAY TO PROBLEMS

It is typical in today's environment to take many pills, tablets, and supplements per day. While some of these things may help you feel better, they may also make you less aware of the dangers of misusing prescription medicines. Popping pills isn't risk-free, and you shouldn't do it without medical supervision.

The term "popping pills" refers to the incidental or deliberate administration of a higher-than-recommended dose of a medication. A drug is a chemical substance that alters the way the body operates and is used for medical (disease treatment), performance enhancing (physical feature modification), or recreational (mental behaviour modification) purposes. Over-the-counter or prescribed painkillers, anti-depressants, vitamins, supplements, weight reduction aids, and performance enhancing medicines are among the most commonly overused or abused drugs.

Prescriptions pills are aimed to aid us in becoming or feeling better. However, because so many people take several medications, doctors are being advised to consider about "deprescribing" before prescribing.

WHY IS IT BAD FOR US TO TAKE PILLS?

Popping pills can become an incredibly dangerous habit. Your pill popping habit can lead to a slew of disorders like liver toxicity, ulcers and renal failure. The more medicines a person takes, the higher the chance that one or more of them will have an unwanted or harmful effect.

Popping pills could be damaging in a variety of ways. Learn how taking pills on a constant basis might cause dozens of new issues.

  • Side effects are worse than the underlying problem: One of the dangers of taking pills is that the medication's side effects may be worse than the underlying problem. You might, for example, start taking sleeping pills to help you sleep better at night. Then you might notice that you're drowsy during the day or that you're experiencing sadness or sluggish symptoms.

This can lead to a dangerous cycle in which people take increasing amounts of drugs to solve their concerns. It's especially troublesome if you've been taking medicines for a long time.
  • Medications can have a negative interaction with one another:  Certain pills may not appear to be hazardous at first glance. You may take medications for weeks or even months without experiencing any side effects. However, this does not rule out the possibility of future issues. Mixing drugs, in particular, can be a major problem.

When taken with another drug, the adverse effects of popping pills may be exacerbated. You would not be aware of these prohibited side effects if you were on your own. Only if you notified your doctor what drugs you were taking and in what amounts would you have this information.
  • Creating an environment in which using pills appears to be harmless: Individually, it's critical to avoid using prescription drugs unless they're given by a medical practitioner. We also need to encourage others to follow suit. This includes not sharing prescriptions with friends and family members, as well as not taking more than the recommended dose. Respecting prescription medications rather than using pills casually can help to improve the country's drug addiction culture.
  • Possible addiction to prescription drugs or pills: Addiction is possible even if you don't notice any obvious harmful effects from pill misuse. Your body grows addicted to addictive drugs over time. Your tolerance changes over time, and you may need to take higher doses to achieve the same results. In other words, a recreational or medical pill habit might turn into a serious drug addiction (1).

   DANGEROUS TYPES OF PESCRIPTION PILLS

If you've been prescribed one of these following pills that is noted below, it might be a good idea to look into other possibilities, such as psychological or behavioural approaches to anxiety, sleep, or pain management. Some common types of harmful prescription pills are:

  • Painkillers: Overdose deaths from prescription opioids such as Oxycodone (such as OxyContin), Hydrocodone (such as Vicodin), and Fentanyl have climbed dramatically over the last decade, in line with this rise in painkiller use.
  • Methadone: Methadone is technically a prescription painkiller, although it is typically administered to help individuals wean themselves off heroin or as a heroin substitute. Methadone is considered the lesser of two evils when it comes to treating heroin addiction.
  • Benzodiazepines: These are a class of tranquillizer medications that have been used to treat a wide range of ailments, including anxiety and insomnia. Unfortunately, those who use them for more than a brief period of time may develop dependence, which can lead to a potentially fatal withdrawal crisis (2).
HOW TO PREVENT HARMFUL EFFECTS OF PILLS?

To lower your chances of encountering harmful effects by the pills, you can try do the following:

  • Follow your doctor's instructions for taking all medications. Make sure your doctor is aware of your disease as well as the indications and symptoms. Inform your doctor about all of your prescription drugs, as well as over-the-counter medications, herbal supplements, and alcohol and other drug usage. Inquire with your doctor about an alternative drug that contains components that are less likely to cause addiction.
  • Take no one else's medication.
  • Learn everything you can about your drug. Consumer Medicine Information is a pamphlet that comes with all prescription drugs (CMI). This provides in-depth information on the medicine, including how to take it, side effects, and precautions, in plain English. The CMI for your medicine can also be obtained from your pharmacist.
  • If you buy over-the-counter or supplemental drugs, talk to your pharmacist. They can provide you with information on potential adverse effects and interactions with other medications you're taking. Be warned that over-the-counter medications can have negative side effects.
  • Inform your doctor about all of your medications, including prescription, over-the-counter, and complimentary ones.
  • Make a list of all the medications you're taking and evaluate it once a year. This is especially crucial for the elderly, who are more susceptible to negative effects. A review can be done at home or in a pharmacy. For further information on medication reviews, speak with your doctor.

You can also take the following steps to lessen your chance of negative effects from the pills:

  • Consult your doctor to see if changing your lifestyle will help you avoid using medication.
  • Changes in your diet and regular exercise can help you manage some diseases better.
  • Return any unwanted or expired medications to your pharmacist for proper disposal. This is a completely free service.
  • Consult your pharmacist about dosage aids that can help you keep track of your pills. If you take several different drugs at different times, you may be at danger of making mistakes.
Inquire with your doctor or pharmacist about the benefits and hazards of your medications (3).

I was fortunate enough to attend Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) Practitioner training seminar with Dr Rangana Rupavi Choudhuri (PhD). I learnt about how EFT helped Dr Choudhuri with her migraine (Look out for Dr Choudhuri’s story).

Needless to say my stress has left me, my bodily aches and pains have not come back since.

What I am trying to say is, physical ailment or disease may manifest as a result of underlying emotional issues. For example:

  • Headaches – Headaches are a sign that there is too much stress in one’s life.
  • Shoulder ache – Shoulder ache’s are a sign of too much responsibility or burden.
  • Hip ache – May be resulting from unresolved issues such as fears, phobias and may be also related to financial security.
  • Leg/Knee pain – Knee or leg pain is generally related to the fear of progress, or the unknown future.

If you do have constant aches and pains learn how you can eliminate the pain with minimum or no medication.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (tapping) is clinically proven to lower stress, tension, anxiety, past-trauma to enable health, happiness and vitality.

EFT TAPPING TO STOP POPPING OF PILLS

EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is a form of therapy method which involves a process of intentional tapping (gently, with fingertips) on acupuncture meridian end-points on the face and upper body while saying statements based on psychology out loud.

An EFT intervention utilizes the same pathways/channels found in traditional Chinese energy medicine, whilst also capitalising on our ability to think about or "tune-in" to our problem or issue in proactive ways.

EFT or “tapping” is easy to learn and flexible enough to be used by anyone. It can allow us to transform the way we respond to uncomfortable thoughts, feelings, and troubling memories (with pain, tension or stress, for example). Whether it is used alone or together with an experienced practitioner, EFT can bring surprising – and lasting – relief, change the energy we bring to any life situation, and so much more.

As we explore EFT for ourselves, we can become more aware of how our thoughts, beliefs and emotions affect us physiologically – and we can make changes for the better.

The basic tapping sequence of the EFT is as follows:

  1. Measure the problem from 1 to 10… Ask “What number would you give this problem on a scale of 1 to 10 where 10 is a very big problem and 1 is not big at all”. if there is a feeling, ask “On a scale of 1 to 10 how intense is the feeling where 10 is very intense and 1 is not at all”. Alternatively, for physical tension, ask “On a scale of 1 to 10 what number would you give this tension where 10 is very high and 1 is not high at all”.
  2. The Setup… While continuously tapping on the Karate Chop point, repeat this affirmation three times: ‘Even though I have this(name the problem), I deeply and completely accept myself.’
  3. The tapping sequence… Tap about 7 times on each of the following energy points while repeating the Reminder Phrase at each point.
  • Eyebrow
  • Side of Eye
  • Under Eye
  • Under nose
  • Chin
  • Collarbone
  • Underarm
  • Thumb
  • Index Finger
  • Middle Finder
  • Little Finger
  • Karate Chop

Tap about 7 times on each of the energy points while repeating the Reminder Phrase at each point.

4. Measure the problem from 1 to 10 and repeat all of the above if necessary: Note - in subsequent rounds the Setup affirmation and the Reminder Phrase are adjusted to reflect that you are addressing the remaining problem: i.e “Even though I still have some of (this problem)…“ (Setup) “This remaining (problem)…“ (Reminder Phrase)

5. Closing Sequence (Karate Chop): "Even though ...the problem.. I deeply and completely love and accept myself."

Just take a moment and go within knowing with every breath you take in, you're feeling more and more okay and when that is completely complete for you, you can open your eyes, breathe in and breathe out.

Take a sip of water after completing the tapping procedure and you'll feel much better and light.

You may be embarrassed to discuss it, but keep in mind that medical professionals are trained to help you rather than to judge you.
