Daring Not So Greatly inspired by Brene Browne
“Numb the dark and you numb the light.” Brené Brown, Daring Greatly
I came home after a really hard day feeling exhausted, lost and sad. After changing I settled into my favourite sofa with a warm blanket and flicked through Netflix hoping to find something that would soothe like a calming balm.
Lo and behold I did not find a film to distract but instead Brene Brown (Daring Greatly) staring back at me. She opened with the quote from Teddy Roosevelt from 1910.
“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly."
This quote made so much sense and yet I had to google it and read it again and again for it to fully percolate in. When I heard this quote for the first time as I watched Brene on stage it felt like truth was being spoken. The years of critic melted away. All the times when I have given more weight to those who critiscied rather than my self belief. The years of procrastinating and putting things off so that I might not be in the arena - exposed, vulnerable with the potential to fail. All the times I stayed away from the arena valuing the comfort zone more than the terror of exposure.
One of the healing techniques that I learnt that helped me to step out of my comfort zone and allowed my vulnerable self to be seen was The Journey by Brandon Bays. Standing on stage and presenting The Journey is a seat of truth. It is very exposing and yet it creates a deep sense of peace and calm.
At times I can be shaking on the inside as I am sharing stories from my life that are raw and pure. My voice quivers as I open up about instances where I might have got angry. While I was not proud of having got angry and yet I was being truthful to my own behaviours and patterns.
I further went onto share how the discovery of these surface behaviours also propelled me to dive deep within myself and discover the root cause of the reason I got angry and to gain freedom from the pattern (or at least have more awareness when I am getting triggered and own it fully rather than projecting it outwards).

The Journey is integral to my daily life and as part of an on-going inner program to strip away the ego and open to an unconditional love. However, over the last few years I have noticed that I have not been playing in the arena as much as I might have done in the past.
So this quote by Brene Brown brought me great comfort to step out and get into the arena, “When we spend our lives waiting until we’re perfect or bulletproof before we walk into the arena, we ultimately sacrifice relationships and opportunities that may not be recoverable, we squander our precious time, and we turn our backs on our gifts, those unique contributions that only we can make. Perfect and bulletproof are seductive, but they don’t exist in the human experience.”
Yet the gift of Daring Greatly is living life beyond measure allowing for joy, passion and contentment with self.
